Sunday 01-15-17

Sunday was a relaxing day reading the local newspaper. Not much politics which is great. The first headline was the collapsed roof of a Breckenridge hotel last Wednesday from the weight of the historic snowfall of the last 2 weeks . The second was the closure of Arapahoe ski area due to avalanche concerns. Roads in and out of the resort were closed due to the snow fall. I can't remember when a ski area was totally closed. The Summit County Sheriff's Office responded to an afternoon report from backcountry skiers Wednesday that the Maid of Orleans Cabin about a mile up Peru Creek was destroyed by an avalanche. And last, on Thursday, Breckenridge reclaimed the record for the Longest Shot ski with 1,234 people participating creating a 1,997 foot shot ski. The shots were filled with Hot Box mountain cinnamon whiskey that's 66.6 percent alcohol. The weather was mild with occasional snow showers.

On Saturday as we approached Denver, you could clearly see the mountains which were about 30 miles away. Rt 70 is a straight road with windmills along the way. We went to the Arapahoe Cafe for $7 burgers and watched as Green Bay defeated Dallas. Hopefully we will see the sun tomorrow. GO Kansas City
